Keys to the 1970 wiring diagram:

Cable colour codes. You may want to study this
L  light (in case of light green: stabilised power)
B  black (ground)  G  green (hot with ignition on, fused)
K  pink (ballast terminal to ignition distributor)  N  brown (hot all the time, unfused)
P  purple (hot all the time, fused)  R  red (accessories fed by sidelights switch)
S  slate (=gray)(window motors)  U  blue (from main light switch via hand/dip switches)
W  white (hot from ignition switch or starter solenoid, eventually ending on some ballast resistor)  Y  yellow (overdrive, injection, door locks,...)

Relays: W1-W2 is the switching current
C1-C2 is the power (switched) current; normally open; closes by energizing W1-W2
C3-C2 is the power (switched) current; normally closed; opens by energizing W1-W2
The drawing says C1/C2 even where C3/C2-type relays
are in use. Use the proper parts numbers!

Numbered objects on the wiring diagram:

The table here below started as a copy of the printed list of keys that came with the original wiring diagram. But that drawing contains several numbered items that were not explained in the original key list. A handful of those have been added to the list below, if I came across them and was able to identify them myself. But a few numbered items stay unexplained. Also, there are unnumbered (and unexplained) items in the drawing (e.g. look to the left of item 37) and there are even a few items missing entirely (such as the Lucas 3AW warning light control unit (Ignition Light Relay) and the 4TR battery regulator).

But please note that very early cars (until spring 1972 approx.) had a Lucas 11AC alternator which used a separate 4TR output regulator box, and after that aLucas 20ACR alternator was fitted which had a built-in regulator system. This is probably the reason that the 1970 wiring diagram does not show that separate 4TR regulator.

A strategy that has worked for me is: consult the 1986/1990 wiring diagram, which is also on this web site. Although the numbering is totally different from this 1970 version, the basic structure of the drawing is the same: many low level differences, many high level similarities. You then benefit from the fact that that 1986/1990 key list has fewer omissions.

As an aid in finding the various objects in the drawing, I have added coordinate values for each one. The coordinate system has its origin in the lower left corner of the drawing, and the values are Hor/Vert percentages. E.g. 50/50 is the centre of the drawing, and 100/75 is on the right side, ¾ up from the bottom.

The large multi-connector next to the engine against the right wheel well.

This connector connects wires from the dashboard to various point on the right side of the engine. It has 7 connection points (5 used, 2 unused). On the wiring diagram these connection points are shown as two small concentric circles. From top to bottom on the connector:
